Pennsylvania drivers would have to carry double the current required minimum amount of auto liability insurance under a proposed state bill that will be discussed in Philadelphia on Thursday.
If enacted, the bill would increase the minimum amount of liability insurance vehicle owners must carry from $15,000 to $30,000 for any one person injured and from $30,000 to $60,000 for injuries to two or more persons. The minimum required coverage for property damage would increase from $5,000 to $10,000.
“Increased costs associated with medical care have forced the need to raise the amount of liability insurance an individual must carry,” Hughes said in a statement. “Not only that, the current limited liability insurance rates have remained the same since the law was first established in 1991, not adjusting for inflation.”
